A full-service discount broker with a wide toolkit

Charles Schwab runs a U.S. brokerage and banking franchise built around commission-free stock and ETF trades, a long menu of account types, and research platforms that serve both new investors and active traders. After bringing TD Ameritrade into the fold in 2020, Schwab also folded in the thinkorswim trading suite and expanded access to markets such as forex and certain crypto-linked products.

What follows walks through how accounts work, the published fee schedule, asset coverage, banking add-ons, and practical trade-offs—without telling you where to put your money.

How a Schwab relationship is set up

Schwab brokerage accounts can be opened with no required opening deposit and no ongoing maintenance fee. Online stock trades carry no commission, and the firm does not charge withdrawal fees or impose a cap on how much you may invest. If you prefer a representative to place an order for you, broker-assisted trades are available for a $25 fee per trade.

Taxable brokerage accounts sit alongside a full retirement and education lineup, including Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, custodial IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, rollover and inherited IRAs, individual 401(k)s, 529 plans, Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), and UGMA/UTMA custodial accounts. Joint ownership options (joint tenants with rights of survivorship, tenants in common, and community property where state law allows) and trust accounts are also on the menu. IRAs and other retirement accounts follow ordinary federal contribution limits, eligibility rules, and early-withdrawal tax treatment.

Automated portfolios

Schwab Intelligent Portfolios is the firm’s robo-advisor path. It carries no advisory fee and no commissions, with a $5,000 account minimum. Intelligent Portfolios Premium adds human planning support for a $300 one-time planning fee plus a $30 monthly advisory fee, and requires a $25,000 minimum. Separately, Schwab Managed Portfolios start at a 0.90% fee with a $25,000 minimum. Those entry points sit higher than many standalone automation apps.

What you can hold

Schwab supports a broad cross-section of asset classes:

  • Stocks, including fractional shares through Schwab Stock Slices starting at $5
  • ETFs (more than 2,000 available, including more than 25 low-cost Schwab ETFs)
  • Mutual funds, index funds, and money market funds
  • Bonds, bond funds, bond ETFs, U.S. Treasury bills, and CDs
  • Options and futures
  • Forex
  • Cryptocurrency exposure through ETFs, coin trusts, futures, and industry stocks (no direct spot coin trading)

Fractional ETF shares are not offered. Crypto access widened after the TD Ameritrade combination, but it still differs from brokers that support spot coins.

Published trading and account costs

Core self-directed online pricing looks like this:

  • Online stock and ETF trades: $0
  • Online options: $0.65 per contract
  • Online futures and futures options: $2.25 per contract
  • Schwab Mutual Fund OneSource online purchases: $0
  • Other mutual funds: up to $74.95 per purchase
  • Broker-assisted trades, options, OneSource funds, and other mutual funds: base pricing plus a $25 service charge
  • Account opening and maintenance fees: $0
  • Account minimum fees: $0

Zero-commission treatment does not extend to online futures and futures options. Schwab publishes a full pricing schedule online for other product lines.

Platforms and research

thinkorswim is the advanced desktop and trading environment: strategy testing, charting, order entry, market monitoring, and access to live trader support. It arrived with the TD Ameritrade integration and remains a primary draw for hands-on traders.

The Schwab website supports multi-product comparison (up to five names at once against expert ratings), custom filters, and predefined stock screeners such as dividend-growth or small-cap-growth screens. Paper trading is available so you can practice in a simulated market with fake money—something not every brokerage offers.

Mobile experience has drawn mixed feedback since the platform transition, including reports of order slippage and app freezes that required restarting the app.

Banking, cash, cards, and other services

With a linked brokerage relationship, Schwab Bank Investor Checking has no maintenance or activity fees and no account minimum. As of 07/06/26 it earned 0.01% APY. The debit card carries no foreign transaction fees and unlimited ATM fee rebates worldwide.

Schwab Bank Investor Savings likewise has no monthly service fee and no minimum; it includes an ATM card with unlimited worldwide ATM fee rebates. As of 07/06/26 it earned 0.15% APY—well below leading high-yield savings rates.

Schwab also offers brokered CDs with maturities from three months to two years (rates and terms move more frequently than at many banks). Through American Express it markets the American Express Platinum Card® for Schwab and the Schwab Investor Card® from American Express. Home-loan access is available via a Rocket Mortgage partnership.

Schwab has eliminated cash-sweep options for new and existing accounts, so uninvested brokerage cash may earn nothing unless you deliberately reposition it. That cash-yield gap is a common comparison point versus brokers that still advertise competitive sweep rates.

Who tends to use Schwab

The combination of education, screeners, paper trading, and low self-directed stock costs can suit people still building investing fluency. Active traders may lean on thinkorswim’s depth of charts and data. Families often use UGMA/UTMA custodial accounts or custodial IRAs; account control can be transferred when a minor reaches adulthood.

The large product surface area and professional-grade tools can feel busy if you only want a simple automated portfolio. The $5,000 Intelligent Portfolios minimum and higher Premium thresholds also matter if you preferred Robo entry points measured in tens of dollars.

How it stacks up at a glance

Fidelity is another full-line traditional broker. Relative to Schwab, it is often cited for broader crypto pathways and more favorable treatment of cash balances.

Vanguard is frequently chosen for index funds and ETFs. Schwab compares with $0 brokerage account fees versus a $25 annual fee on Vanguard brokerage accounts, $0.65 versus $1 per options contract, and a $25,000 minimum on Schwab Intelligent Portfolios Premium versus $50,000 on Vanguard Personal Advisor Services. Vanguard does not offer crypto products; many of its funds carry higher investment minimums. Active traders generally rate Schwab’s platforms ahead of Vanguard’s.

Robinhood targets smaller starting balances (stocks, options, and ETFs from as little as $1) and commission-free spot crypto such as bitcoin, ethereum, litecoin, and dogecoin. That structure appeals when the priority is tiny starter amounts or direct coins rather than research depth.

Account protection and fee transparency

Schwab brokerage balances are covered by SIPC protection up to $500,000 per investor, including a $250,000 cap on uninvested cash. Commodity interests and cash in futures accounts fall outside SIPC coverage.

Schwab is not widely known for undisclosed charges and posts its pricing schedule publicly. Separately, in June 2022 the firm agreed to pay $187 million to settle an SEC investigation into alleged hidden fees tied to Schwab Intelligent Portfolios.

Key takeaways

Schwab pairs zero online stock and ETF commissions, $0 account opening and maintenance fees, and extensive account variety with institutional-grade tools like thinkorswim and a deep ETF shelf. Banking products add ATM-fee rebates and global debit convenience, though checking and savings APYs (0.01% and 0.15% as of 07/06/26) are modest, and cash-sweep earnings on idle brokerage cash have been discontinued. Higher robo minimums, no fractional ETFs, and a denser interface are the main counterweights. Matching those facts to your own account type, trading style, and cash needs is the practical next step.
